intimacy

when we speak of intimacy in the theatre we are often talking about a shared experience between spectators and performers.

is a different kind of intimacy possible if the distance between an audience and performer is taken away and the two are able to touch?

most of my training, and instinct for that matter, has been about keeping a distance. i understand this barrier to be what keeps real life separated from the theatre world. the separation between actor and character, from stage and audience, from me and you… the distance is a place to think about ourselves… to see a reflection…

for me, this idea keeps the work safe… tangible…

but now that i am aware of that, the idea makes me want to tear the barrier down.

an idea that is assumed is only the starting point for an idea to be discovered.
